Spam Tagging Etiquette

If I get added to a mailing list after buying something, I'll try to unsub. If that doesn't work do you mark it as SPAM? Is it worth contacting somebody? Complaining?

Feels very passive.

I usually just complain to Roger, but that hasn't proven to be terribly useful.

Back when I ran my old mail server I made more of an attempt to go after the source. It is futile. Try the unsubscribe and after that mark as spam.

In one case, I did see a change of sorts. I was getting mail from UIUC which I no longer wanted. Since I graduated from there they assumed I wanted to get emails from them. To unsubscribe they wanted you to register on their web site, yada yada. So I ignored it for a while. Then I started marking as spam. One day the mails started to appear with the handy 'click this link to unsubscribe' -- and it even worked.

Lesson learned is try their unsubscribe link (unless it is an IP address -- then it is prob. a valid email collection scheme). If they don't honor your request then they are spammers! Go ahead and press that "Report Spam" button on gmail. They deserve it.
